Dumbing Down Proved Again

Dumbing down is the deliberate oversimplification of intellectual content in education, literature, cinema, news, video games, language and culture. Originated in 1933, the term "dumbing down" was movie-business slang, used by screenplay writers, meaning: "to revise so as to appeal to people with little education or intelligence.”

Dumbing-down varies according to the subject matter, and usually involves the diminishment of critical thought by undermining language and learning standards. In this way meaningful information is trivialized, academic standards are lowered, important knowledge is omitted and culture is made more crude as is the the case in the popular culture of today.

† Critical thinking is self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. It presupposes approval and agreement to rigorous standards of excellence and mindful command of their use. It entails effective communication and problem-solving abilities. It includes a commitment to overcome ego pressures and society pressures such as those offered by the Cult Of Trump.

I have witnessed young men and women in college cafeterias, sitting right across from each other, ignoring each other completely as they feverishly play video games on their phones— both thumbs hammering away as fast as possible. Makes me want to say, “What is your name?” Jack. “And your name?” Jill. “Jill, may I present Jack? And Jack, this is Jill. How about looking at each other and speaking to each other for a few minutes?”

In 1945 the feds “took over” education in America so they could dumb down the citizens. Just in case you were wondering what a thoroughly dumbed-down American looks like and sounds like, just
