Thorium—How To Get Rid Of Big Oil And Nuclear Power Plants

Jump to the 2022 Update here.

Thorium is a slightly radioactive substance that has been kept hidden from us for at least 50 years. Why has it been hidden?

  • So power utilities could charge the public huge amounts of money instead of each homeowner paying $1 per year by switching to Thorium.
  • To allow Big Oil to to push and push and push their noxious products and make huge obscene profits while ruining our planet’s atmosphere and causing the deadly Climate Disaster.
  • To allow super deadly atomic power plants to put us all at risk.

Thorium has been mined for many decades. Until now, it has been considered “waste.” It’s left unused on the ground where it is mined.

Consider This

  • A pellet the size of a child’s marble in a molten salt reactor provides a household with power for an entire human lifetime
  • $1 per year for all the energy you will ever need for heating, air conditioning, washing, cooking, electric vehicle charging
  • Elimination of the huge backlog of nuclear waste by putting it in with Thorium which makes the nuclear waste from atomic reactors (normally dangerous for 100,000 years)  dangerous for only 300 years!
  • “Mo Salt” reactors smaller than the original Volkswagen can be built on an assembly line, drastically reducing their cost for each household

DOWN WITH

  • Atomic Power Plants

where skimping on construction, bad security, inept operators, faulty instrumentation and tidal waves can make huge explosions and china syndrome events that make the entire surrounding area uninhabitable for 100,000 years!
  • Big Oil

for their criminal past where they have been:
    • eliminating inventors along with their (no fossil fuel needed) inventions—like water-powered cars
    • lying about their horrible plastic products—by pretending that plastic is recyclable. It isn’t. All life on the earth and in the seas are being polluted by plastic.
    • creating HUGE oil spills that sweep the sea completely clear of all life from the surface spill location right down to the bottom of the sea. As each oil spill sinks, it kills all ocean life—right to the bottom.
    • fracking where Big Oil pumps noxious and poisonous liquid into the ground to try to get more oil. Fracking poisons the water table and all the humans who live nearby.
    • the destruction of Earth’s ozone layer causing the climate disaster which is destroying our air, seas, forests, polar ice, weather and life on Earth!
    • pushing and pushing oil and gas which produces so much hot-house CO2 it is killing our planet with heat

UP WITH

  • Thorium and (Safe) Molten Salt Reactors

  • no huge buildings and
  • no complex controls
  • no earthquake = atom bomb explosion
  • no tidal wave = atom bomb explosion
  • spent thorium only has to be stored for 300 years NOT 100,000 years like nuclear fuel
  • thorium can “burn up” spent nuclear fuel waste so it only has to be stored for 300 years, not 100,000 years
  • molten salt reactors can’t be used to make atom bombs
  • if you walk away from a molten salt reactor it just shuts itself down

You’ll be glad you did.

Chinese Molten Salt Reactor Cleared For Startup

The Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics (SINAP)—part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)—has been given approval by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment to commission an experimental thorium-powered molten-salt reactor, construction of which started in Wuwei city, Gansu province, in September 2018.

In January 2011, CAS launched a CNY3 billion (USD444 million) R&D program on liquid fluoride thorium reactors (LFTRs), known there as the thorium-breeding molten-salt reactor (Th-MSR or TMSR), and claimed to have the world's largest national effort on it, hoping to obtain full intellectual property rights on the technology. This is also known as the fluoride salt-cooled high-temperature reactor (FHR). The TMSR Centre at SINAP at Jiading, Shanghai, is responsible.

Construction of the 2 MWt TMSR-LF1 reactor began in September 2018 and was reportedly completed in August 2021. The prototype was scheduled to be completed in 2024, but work was accelerated.

"According to the relevant provisions of the Nuclear Safety Law of the People's Republic of China and the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on the Safety Supervision and Administration of Civilian Nuclear Facilities, our bureau has conducted a technical review of the application documents you submitted, and believes that your 2 MWt liquid fuel thorium-based molten salt experimental reactor commissioning plan (Version V1.3) is acceptable and is hereby approved," the Ministry of Ecology and Environment told SINAP on 2 August.

It added: "During the commissioning process of your 2 MWt liquid fuel thorium-based molten salt experimental reactor, you should strictly implement this plan to ensure the effectiveness of the implementation of the plan and ensure the safety and quality of debugging. If any major abnormality occurs during the commissioning process, it should be reported to our bureau and the Northwest Nuclear and Radiation Safety Supervision Station in time."

The TMSR-LF1 will use fuel enriched to under 20% U-235, have a thorium inventory of about 50 kg and conversion ratio of about 0.1. A fertile blanket of lithium-beryllium fluoride (FLiBe) with 99.95% Li-7 will be used, and fuel as UF4.

The project is expected to start on a batch basis with some online refuelling and removal of gaseous fission products, but discharging all fuel salt after 5-8 years for reprocessing and separation of fission products and minor actinides for storage. It will proceed to a continuous process of recycling salt, uranium and thorium, with online separation of fission products and minor actinides. The reactor will work up from about 20% thorium fission to about 80%.

If the TMSR-LF1 proves successful, China plans to build a reactor with a capacity of 373 MWt by 2030.

As this type of reactor does not require water for cooling, it will be able to operate in desert regions. The Chinese government has plans to build more across the sparsely populated deserts and plains of western China, complementing wind and solar plants and reducing China's reliance on coal-fired power stations. The reactor may also be built outside China in Belt and Road Initiative nations.

The Chinese liquid fuel design is descended from the successful 1960s Molten-Salt Reactor Experiment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the USA. After the success, Oak Ridge abandoned the project.

Wait!
What?
The Oak Ridge had a Thorium molten salt reactor
safely running back in 1960?
Then they dropped the project?

Why did they abandon it?

What could have possibly turned off the research at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory? Turned off the research that could have saved planet Earth from

  • Three Mile Island disaster
  • The Chernobyl disaster
  • The Fukushima disaster?

Could it be that jealous US utility companies were trying to protect their obscene profits by insisting Thorium reactor research be shelved?

Which utilities are most likely to blame for the shelving of Thorium research? These:

  • The Big Oil Lobby?
  • The US electric utilities lobby?
  • The coal producing lobby?
  • Makers of hugely-expensive, poisonous and deadly nuclear power plants?

I think THIS is what happened to the US leadership with Thorium Molten Salt Reactors.

Oak Ridge was supposed to work on projects
that benefit the US!

Oak Ridge should not have
bowed to the demands of the
greedy energy companies!

Know what?
This is a national tragedy!
That’s what it is.

For 62 years, US Thorium technology could have been providing each American family with all the electric power they could possibly use for lighting, heating, cooling, hot water, cooking and charging their electric cars. The cost for running a tiny, safe, home-based Thorium reactor is $1 per year.

Thorium reactor use could have saved Americans from:

  • way, way, way too high electric utility bills
  • oil pollution
  • coal pollution
  • CO2 emissions
  • global warming
  • the climate disaster
  • having to store nuclear waste for 100,000 years (instead of 300 years for used-up Thorium)
  • the horrible dangers of using nuclear energy

So!

Who is bringing this technology into everyday use?

The Americans? No.

It is the Chinese who are moving ahead with this planet-saving technology.

Once again
America has fallen
flat on its face.
